Millions of Americans who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will see their October 2026 payments arrive in the coming weeks.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the federal government funds SNAP while individual states administer the program and determine their own distribution schedules.

How SNAP Payments Work Across States

Because states set their own schedules, payment dates vary across the country based on factors like case numbers, Social Security numbers, or recipient last names.

Some smaller states—including Alaska, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and Vermont—issue all monthly benefits on October 1, while larger states like Texas and Florida stagger payments across most of the month.

New Maximum Monthly Allotments for Fiscal Year 2027

October 1 marks the start of the 2027 federal fiscal year, bringing updated maximum benefit amounts for participating households.

For the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the updated maximum monthly amounts are $306 for a single person, $562 for a household of two, $808 for three, and $1,023 for four.

Individual benefit amounts depend on household net income, meaning most recipients receive less than the maximum allowance.

USDA data shows that average benefits stood at $186.53 per person earlier this year, with Hawaii being the only state to see a slight reduction due to a separate regional calculation under the Thrifty Food Plan.
